Meet Anika

I was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie in Northern Ontario. I grew up with a love of swimming, cycling, and theatre.  Before moving to Halifax in 2014, I spent six years living and working across Canada and the world, gaining diverse experiences ranging from being a cook to a scuba diving instructor.

University eventually brought me back to Canada, and the ocean and east coast attitude brought me to Halifax. Over the past decade, I’ve fallen in love with this city, the people, the history, and the deeply rooted east coast pride.

While studying at Dalhousie University, I spearheaded the Jump In Project with the goal of encouraging urban swimming in the Halifax Harbour. I spent four years pushing to make this happen, including liaising with several stakeholders, including HRM, Develop NS, the Port Authority, Halifax Water, DFO and more.

In spite of all the naysayers and barriers, we organized a magical harbour swim in 2017. I’m still holding my breath for long-term urban swimming infrastructure, but pleased to see folks jumping into the harbour on a more regular basis without unnecessary fear.

Since finishing my studies at Dalhousie, I’ve worked in the environmental community as an active transportation expert and in the local theatre community as an administrator, producer, and occasional actor. I currently work as the Senior Active Transportation Policy Coordinator and the Kelp Kurious Coordinator at the Ecology Action Centre.

My work has often brought me to the table of municipal, provincial and federal decision-making, and I’ve learned the importance of having knowledgeable, bold, and creative community leaders who can think strategically and in the long-term interests of our city.

I love this city and the people who call it home! However, I also see that we are facing some daunting challenges: unprecedented growth, realities of climate change, and deep economic and racial inequities. I believe that Halifax needs a strong and progressive Council who will strive to make this city more resilient and equitable.

My eclectic background has given me a 'jack-of-all-trades' attitude with a deep respect for the people on the ground who are putting in the work! I believe in collaborating with experts, asking questions, and finding common ground.
